Contact lens wearers often suffer from the symptoms of dry and irritated eyes. Contact lenses disrupt the structure of the tear film, resulting in quicker evaporation of the tear fluid on the surface of the eye. The eye surface/cornea dries out, is no longer supplied with enough oxygen and can be damaged. As a result, the eyesight can be diminished and the patients suffer from blurred vision.
Similarly, people who work in front of screens in offices can also be affected by the sicca syndrome or keratoconjunctivitis sicca. When looking at the screen, the blinking frequency is reduced, less tear fluid reaches the surface of the eye, which causes the eye to dry out faster. Often this is accompanied by the sensation that a foreign body is in the eye (grain of sand sensation). In addition, dry room air, air from air conditioners or strong draughts irritate the eyes and dry out the eye surface. Similarly, elderly persons also often complain of reduced tear production and dry eyes.
The dry eye condition should not be underestimated. Untreated, the sicca syndrome or lasting grain of sand sensation can lead to conjunctivitis or blepharitis, especially if there are additional environmental irritants to the dry eyes.
Relief for dry eyes is provided by artificial tear products with hyaluronic acid from OmniVision. The hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally as a component of the tear film in human eyes, is a polysaccharide that is distinguished by a high hydrophilic capacity. Eye drops with hyaluronic acid for dry eyes are therefore ideally suited as artificial tear and hydrating solutions. Applied to the eye, hyaluronic acid adheres to the eye surface, binding tear fluid, thus providing improved hydration and lubrication as well as a uniform, stable and long-lasting hydrating film.
