Eye drops for dry eyes

Dry eyes – what does that mean exactly?

The medical condition of dry eyes is medically known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), it is also called dry eye syndrome (DES). It occurs when there is too little tear fluid in the eye or if there is a change to the composition of the tear fluid. There are a variety of reasons that cause this condition: general health issues, specific eye illnesses as well as environmental factors, wearing contact lenses, office work, dry room air, and much more. They can all lead to rupturing of the tear film that usually protects the eye surface from all sides.

Possible causes for dry eyes

  • Long periods staring at a monitor or mobile phone

Spending lots of time in front of a monitor causes your eyes to blink less. This disrupts the tear film, making your eyes dry. And there are other factors that can make dry eyes worse when working in front of a monitor. Reflections from an incorrectly positioned monitor may strain your eyes. The same applies if you spend much time with your mobile phone or tablet.

  • Dry room air, low humidity

Heated air in winter frequently causes dry eyes. In summer though, air conditioning de-moisturises the ambient air and water vaporises more in the air. Air conditioning systems are commonplace in the workplace, in shops, public buildings, in cars and planes, often causing the surface of your eye to dry out. Draughts or tobacco smoke also have an adverse effect on the eye’s tear film.

  • Ozone and other air pollutants

On summer days, the ozone concentration in the ambient air increases not only due to the “ozone hole”. Many printers and copiers also emit this irritant gas. Ozone and other air pollutants can affect the tear film.

  • Contact lenses

Wearing contact lenses can disrupt the structure of the tear film and result in more humidity evaporating from the eye.

  • Medication

The extended use of vasoconstrictive eye drops (so-called eye whitening drops) can irritate the eyes. Similarly, certain medications such as birth control pills, hormonal therapy for the elderly, antiallergics, psychotropic drugs, sleeping medication and widely used medication for lowering high blood pressure also adversely affect the tear film and the blink rate.

  • Illnesses

Illnesses such as rheumatism, thyroid disease, diabetes and various skin diseases can be responsible for dry eyes or accelerate the development of dryness in the eyes.

  • Advancing age

Tear production often diminishes with age.

Relief for dry eyes

The tear fluid has many important functions in the eye: as a lubricant it allows the eye lids to move frictionless over the eyes and it rinses foreign bodies out of the eye. In addition, the tear fluid hydrates and nourishes the cornea and can help ward off pathogens. Insufficient hydration of the eye surface by the tear fluid can result in small lesions to the cornea. Regular rehydration of dry eyes, therefore, brings not only noticeable relief but also prevents damage to the eye.

This is why you should avoid external factors that cause dry eyes such as dry room air, air conditioning or draughts. If that is not possible or does not bring the desired relief, you can use products that lubricate and hydrate the cornea. This way, you re-establish a protective tear film in your eyes.

OmniVision offers you an extensive range of different products for dry eyes. These products are usually in the form of eye drops.

Eye drops with hyaluronic acid are soothing for dry eyes. They hydrate the cornea and conjunctiva similar to the body’s own tear fluid. The contained hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that also occurs in the structures of the human eye and in the tear film, and is therefore particularly well tolerated. It hydrates, lubricates and protects the surface of the eye and ensures an even, stable and long-lasting film of moisture on the surface of the eye.

HYLO-VISION® eye drops from OmniVision for dry eyes are available in various viscosities. The lower the viscosity, the more liquid and fluid the eye drops are. The solution is distributed very easily, yet the exposure time is slightly shorter as the solution is “washed out” quicker. The higher the viscosity, the thicker and less fluid the eye drops. This increases the exposure time on the surface of the eye, allowing intensive hydration and long-lasting relief.

Tips for preventing dry eyes

  1. Ventilate your rooms regularly! This is especially important if you spend lots of time in air-conditioned or highly heated rooms.
  2. Let your eyes wander now and then! If you work in front of a monitor frequently, then you should look away from it every ten minutes and look outside the window, for example. Blink consciously several times to make sure the eyes are lubricated by the tear fluid.
  3. Get some outdoor exercise frequently!
  4. Make sure you drink enough and eat balanced meals with plenty of fruits and vegetables!
  5. If you use contact lenses, don’t wear them for too long when your eyes are already dry. Make sure to use contact lenses and contact lens care products that are well tolerated.
